José M. Fernandez is a Full Professor in the Computer & Software Engineering Department at the École Polytechnique de Montréal, where he heads the Information Systems Security Research Lab. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of the SERENE-RISC Knowledge Mobilization Network and is a board member at Cybereco, a Quebec-based cybersecurity sectorial organization. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer & Electrical Engineering at the Royal Military College Kingston. Mr. Fernandez currently serves on the Advisory Board of two different cybersecurity start-ups in Quebec and Ontario.
His research interests include AI-based Cyber Security and Cyber Physical Systems Security, in particular with applications to critical infrastructure. He has conduced research in cybersecurity in aviation, maritime transport, electrical networks, road traffic control networks and medical devices. Mr. Fernandez has several years of professional experience in computer security in the private and public sector and holds two bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Computer Engineering from MIT, a Master’s from the University of Toronto in Cryptography, and a Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal in Quantum Computing.
